We’ve all probably seen figures thrown around ranging from 7 to 10 hours sleep per night as being standard. But what you may not know is that the amount of sleep we require is entirely dependent upon both our age and our lifestyles. Children, for example, require up to 2.5 hours more sleep than the average adult. Each individual is different, however, and it is mostly up to you to decide how much sleep is healthy for you. You can figure out if you get enough sleep by considering a few simple points and seeing if they relate to you:

• Difficulty waking up in the morning
• Inability to concentrate on tasks
• Falling asleep during work or classes
• Feelings of moodiness and even depression

If you do find you suffer from any above, it’s quite probable you are not getting to bed early enough. So, how can you try to ensure you do lay your head down for long enough?

Setting yourself a regular bed time is probably the foremost important element in a good night’s sleep. By going to bed at the same time every evening, your body will learn to adjust and be ready for sleep once the time comes around. This will mean you will end up falling asleep far quicker as opposed to rolling around restless for a lengthy period before drifting off. Avoiding caffeine is also crucial and likewise ensuring your body has had sufficient exercise can aid your sleep.

Recent developments in the mattress industry have also shown to have a positive effect on peoples sleep. A memory foam mattresses, which adapts to your shape as you lie, creates a more comfortable place to rest allowing your body to relax more easily and enjoy longer, deeper sleeps.

Another sure fire way of ensuring better sleeping patterns is by removing all electronic objects from the bedroom. Surveys would suggest that up to half of people in the UK will regular watch television in bed. This is bad practice as the bedroom should always be reserved solely for sleep so that your body learns to understand the environment and why you are there.
