What kind of air conditioning unit best suits your needs? There are a few means by which you can cool down the inside of your house, and each has a different price point. Following is a guide to the three basic types of residential air conditioning units and some advice to help you make a decision.

Window air conditioners are a favorite means of keep the home cool. They can fit into most standard windows. They feature pleated side panels that adjust to fit the window tightly. Some models can also fit into sliding windows. These units are the most affordable, and are also the best for use with almost any window and wall layout.

Through-the-wall units require that a hole be cut into the exterior walls. It's critical that the hole be cut precisely in order to fit snugly against the air conditioning unit. The advantage of this model is that it doesn't take up precious window space. It will also allow for a tight fit that won't let in air. Many window units can also be installed through the wall if desired. They do require a supporting frame on the outside, though.

Portable air conditioners are freestanding units. These are self contained, and are the latest style. Some models are basically stationary, but many have wheels on the base so they can be easily moved to another room if required. These air conditioners are perfect for rooms that don't get constant use. However, this style is the most expensive of the various options.

So which is best for you? Here are some things to keep in mind in order to help you make the right decision for your needs and your budget.

Sturdiness:Will the air conditioning unit be getting a lot of use, essentially running day and night? Check the quality of the materials used, including the frame, the cover, and the base.

Location: Will the unit be used in a bedroom? Or is its purpose to make the living room a comfortable temperature? The cooling capability of the unit will be affected by the location it's in. You need to purchase a unit that has the capability to cool down the necessary square footage. As well, if it's a very sunny room, you'll probably need a more powerful air conditioner.

Learning curve: Don't get a unit that's so complicated that you spend most of the summer figuring out the controls. When it's essential that the air conditioner be running, you don't have any time to waste in learning how the settings work.
