Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be some sort of spell while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Some of the common misconceptions associated with hypnosis and the reality behind them are discussed here.

There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. It borders more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is willing to learn it. The genuineness of hypnosis is suspected even by individuals who have watched it working on subjects. They say that hypnotised people allow practitioners to perform well in their art by not exhibiting enough will power to withstand the effect of their words. But this again is a complete distortion of truth. Even people with strong will power can fall under the charms of an expert hypnosis practitioner.



Another false belief about hypnosis that people have made up without reason is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is fully awake to what is going on in his surroundings. That person is just in a relaxed state where the attention spans are very high and the person can accept new inputs easily.

Some scientific discoveries have stated that only about 5% of the population is suitable to be hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it hollow is the fact that the researchers used the identical hypnosis procedure for everyone. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable solution as different people fall under different character types, and thus are responsive to different methods.

Many people consider hypnosis to be a form of meditation. However, meditation is essentially a personal feeling that has got nothing to do with communication, whereas communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Similarly, a period of trance is also sometimes confused with hypnosis, which is not true. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, while the very crux of the hypnosis method is communication.

Another misconception is that bodily and behavioural alterations in a person are not possible through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have a vital role to play in the overall welfare of a person, and not giving them a try just because of some misconceptions is an act of folly.
